Personalised Fairtrade chocolate
A few years ago, we started noticing that more and more people were citing Tony’s Chocolonely as their favourite Fairtrade chocolate. Then we went to Ghana and found out that it’s one of the farmers’ favourites, too. Tony’s is seeking to end exploitation in the chocolate industry, and its support of the farmers is exemplary.
Personalised bars from £2.76, available at Tony’s

Wake up and smell the coffee!
Not only will you be helping the recipient wake up in the morning, but for every bag of coffee sold, you will be supporting the RSPB and the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Centre – and ensuring that the coffee growers get a Fairtrade price and premium. Bird & Wild only roasts seasonal coffee certified as Bird Friendly & Shade-Grown by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Centre and contributes to support the Smithsonian’s research and conservation programs.

Starry, starry night
Just Trade has become synonymous with fairly traded jewellery and this range of hammered brass gives you lots of options in design such as stars, hearts, clouds and more. They’re handmade by the Flowering Desert Project, and by purchasing them, you will be supporting women from rural communities in Tamil Nadu, India. What’s more, the jewellery comes in a gift bag which is also handmade by artisans in Vietnam.

Lather up!
Ethics come before profits at Friendly Soap: their ranges contain no animal products, have never been tested on animals, and they even use an ancient cold-process method. Friendly Soap is totally biodegradable and free from by-products which means there is no waste. As they pour, cut, stamp and pack in the UK, their carbon footprint is small too (and the packaging is 100% recyclable).
Selections available from Friendly Soap (boxes of four soaps from £12.50)

Warm for the winter
This recycled rag rug has been woven by skilled artisans using leftover fabrics from the garment industry which would have ended up in landfill. The best part is that no two rugs are the same! So either pop into a local shop to choose your colour, or let Shared Earth pick for you.
Available from Shared Earth (£12.99).

For the cat lover …
Earth Squared works with women artisans in Vietnam to craft goods of superlative quality (we’ve spotted their work in ‘luxury goods’ stores) . The women are trained on the job, have safe working conditions, and are able to take regular breaks and there is flexibility if children’s needs mean a woman can’t work. The women also have insurance and a pension.
Combine that commitment to Fair Trade with sweet design and the quality fabrics … and what’s not to like? Dog purses and highland cow purses are also available at the same price; rectangular purses for about £10.
Available from Earth Squared (£13.95)
