Research Futures: ‘How do I prove gay’ – refugees’ emotional journeys

July 29, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

“The talk will discuss the various hurdles LGBTQ+ refugees have to overcome to ‘prove gay’ to then be afforded sanctuary in the UK

Join the 16th session in the University of Portsmouth’s Interdisciplinary Webinar Series, chaired by Leila Choukroune, Professor of International Law and Director of the University of Portsmouth Thematic Area in Democratic Citizenship, and presented by Dr S. Chelvan, Barrister, PhD Law, No5 Barristers’ Chambers (London)

Acknowledging the perilous physical journey endured to have to cross the border into the UK to claim asylum, Dr S. Chelvan explores the various hurdles LGBTQ+ refugees have to overcome to ‘prove gay’ to then be afforded sanctuary in the United Kingdom. Drawing from two decades of specialist litigation, academic and policy work in the field of LGBT+ asylum claims, both on a national and international stage, Dr Chelvan proposes addressing agency, rather than identity, as the pathway to protection – the Queer Refugee.
