Time for Creation: Prayer Powerpoint

The main item in this week’s prayer email is Elizabeth’s latest prayer powerpoint – for use in personal prayer or public worship during the remaining weeks of Time for Creation. It’s a beautiful acrostic reflection with Bible verses and pictures. We hope it will prove helpful.

Peacemaking Sunday: ‘When I needed a neighbour: refugees and sanctuary’

This Sunday, 18 September, is Peacemaking Sunday, and the theme is ‘When I needed a neighbour: refugees and sanctuary’ The Joint Public Issues Team has provided a set of worship materials that you can use this week or at any point.

Peacemaking Sunday this year comes just before a UN ‘Summit for Refugees and Migrants’ (19 September) and a ‘Leaders’ Summit on the Global Refugee Crisis’ (20 September).

The UN meeting aims to “bring countries together behind a more humane and coordinated approach” to the current situation. It’s a historic summit – the “first time the General Assembly has called for a summit at the Heads of State and Government level on large movements of refugees and migrants” – and it hopes to “strengthen governance of international migration and [create] a more responsible, predictable system for responding to large movements of refugees and migrants.”

The Leaders’ Summit, convened by President Obama on the margins of the UN General Assembly meeting, aims “to galvanize significant new global commitments to: 1) increase funding to humanitarian appeals and international organizations, 2) admit more refugees through resettlement or other legal pathways, and 3) increase refugees’ self-reliance and inclusion through opportunities for education and legal work.”

At the suggestion of the Joint Public Issues Team, please pray:

  • for the success of these meetings
  • for our churches to continue to express concern for and to act in solidarity with refugees

You might want to use this prayer, taken from the Peacemaking Sunday worship materials:

Almighty God, inspire the leaders of the nations of the world and those with authority with love and wisdom, and open our hearts and hands to welcome the stranger, love our enemies and to do to others what we want them to do to us.
May your Holy Spirit reign in the hearts of those who have the power to end strife and conflict and may your presence be with those who seek to serve those in desperate need.  We ask you to bless the international summits taking place in New York on Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 September.
Be in the conversation and the conferencing and in all things remind the mighty and powerful rulers of the desperate situation facing some of the most vulnerable and marginalised people on earth.
We pray especially for the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the President of the United States Barak Obama as they seek to work for diplomacy, peace and the common good of all humankind.
In the name of Christ, who declared “Blessed are the Peacemakers, for they shall be known as children of God”, Amen.

Short Note: Pray for South Sudan

This week, the number of refugees from South Sudan passed one million.

CMS has published an audio interview with mission partners Derek and Jane Waller, which sets out some of the issues in South Sudan and the impact of the crisis on people they know there. It’s ends with a call to prayer and some prayer guidance: please do listen and pray.
